Tennis and Golf Elbow: The Causes and Treatments

Last updated 5 years ago

A number of joint, muscle, and tendon injuries are caused by isolated incidents of trauma or direct blows to the body. However, a number of other conditions—including tennis and golf elbow—are caused by overuse. Fortunately, an experienced pain management specialist can help determine the underlying cause of your injury and offer a number of treatment methods.

Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a condition characterized by the degeneration of the common extensor tendon which attaches to the lateral epicondyle, or the bony bump located on the outer edge of your elbow. This tendon attaches the muscles in your arm that are responsible for moving your wrist back and forth and can be damaged due to repetitive trauma or aging. The symptoms associated with tennis elbow include pain and tenderness which worsens when bending the wrist.

Golf Elbow
Similar to tennis elbow, golf elbow or medial epicondylitis is a condition in which the common flexor tendon that allows the wrist to bends toward the palm of the hand begins to degenerate or break down. As with tennis elbow, golf elbow is caused by age or repetitive stress and is more painful when the tendons are in use.

Treatments
There are a number of available treatment options for individuals suffering from either tennis or golf elbow. Some of these treatments include rest, application of ice, anti-inflammatory medications, cross-friction massage, stretching exercises, physical therapy, and steroid injections.

The best way to determine which treatment option best suits your specific needs is to consult with a pain management facility.
